F-mount interface and backlash
F-mount interface and backlash
Many standard F-mount adaptors for standard photography lenses are affected by backlash: the F-mount interface is intrinsically elastic because is based on pre-load springs. F-mount is a commercial and not an industrial standard, so there's no objective reference to define the spring pre-load nor the exact mechanical tolerances.
Because of its elastic nature, the F-mount interface could be
troublesome if the camera attached to the lens is heavy and the system
is subject to vibrations (obviously, holding the lens in place only
through the camera F-mount is not recommended).
Possible ways to overcome backlash could be:
- blocking the camera, as well;
- trying different camera adaptors;
- increasing the pre-load of the springs.
